Adopting pets shows paw-sitive health benefits for seniors in Charlotte, NC
The residents at Waltonwood Senior Living have been whiskered away by the love of their adopted pets.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — At Waltonwood Senior Living Center in Charlotte, love is in the air — and it has four legs, a tail and a whole lot of purr-sonality.
Residents are discovering that companionship doesn’t always come in human form.
Just ask Laurel Sass, who recently adopted an American Shorthair cat named Lucky Lad. Or just “Lucky,” as she lovingly calls him.
“He’s changed my life,” Sass said, her face lighting up. “There’s not a lonely moment anymore. Lucky fills my days with joy.”
Sass’ story is one of many showing how senior pet adoption can transform lives.
Since Lucky came into her life, her daily routine has found new meaning. He’s not just a source of comfort, he’s a clever companion. Lucky already knows a few commands — and his signature trick? Jumping through hoops, always motivated by a tasty treat.
“He’s really smart for a cat,” Sass laughs. “And I think he enjoys having an audience. My neighbors stop by all the time to see him. He’s quite the entertainer!”

Beyond the tricks and companionship, pets like Lucky provide real health benefits.
Studies show that adopted pets can help reduce anxiety, improve sleep and even slow cognitive decline in older adults. Simply having a pet nearby — especially one that needs and depends on its owner — provides a sense of purpose and emotional connection that’s hard to match.
The team at Waltonwood sees firsthand the difference pets make in their residents’ lives.
“Pets offer unconditional love,” Ashley Jensen, Independent Living Manager at Waltonwood, said. “They help reduce loneliness, create routines, and even encourage physical activity — all of which are incredibly important for our senior residents’ well-being.”
In fact, the benefits extend well beyond emotional support:
-
Physical health: Walking a dog or even playing with a cat can boost mobility, heart health and reduce stress levels.
-
Mental clarity: Interaction with animals keeps seniors present and mentally stimulated.
-
Social connection: Pets like Lucky often become the center of community gatherings, helping residents stay socially active and engaged.
The Clear the Shelters campaign, running throughout the month, aims to find loving homes for as many senior pets as possible.
For Waltonwood residents, that means no adoption fee from the Humane Society of Charlotte and full support from staff to help integrate new furry family members into their lives.
Laurel hopes more of her neighbors will consider it.
“There are so many animals out there who just want someone to love,” Sass says. “And there are so many people here who have love to give.”
As Lucky curls up beside her, purring contentedly, it’s clear this match was meant to be. After all, love knows no age — especially when it’s covered in fur.
